Criterion developed RenderWare: the dominant cross-platform game engine of the PlayStation 2 era, powering hundreds of major titles globally.
Criterion Software, founded in 1993, engineered the RenderWare game engine: a foundational 3D API and middleware solution. This technology became the industry's go-to for multi-platform development, particularly on the PlayStation 2, where it was licensed over 200 times. RenderWare formed the backbone for key franchises including Criterion's own *Burnout* series and several *Need for Speed* titles. Acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2004, the studio now operates as Criterion Games, focused on driving innovation within the *Battlefield* franchise.
