EU AI Act

The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence, establishing a risk-based compliance structure across all member states.

This regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) establishes a tiered, risk-based system for AI governance: unacceptable-risk systems (e.g., social scoring, manipulative techniques) are banned immediately; high-risk systems (e.g., those used in employment, law enforcement, or critical infrastructure) face strict requirements for data quality, human oversight, and technical documentation. The European AI Office oversees enforcement. The Act entered into force on August 1, 2024, with most provisions, including those for high-risk systems, becoming fully applicable by August 2, 2026.
