Neon delivers a modern Postgres experience by separating the storage and compute layers, a key architectural shift. This allows for instant, copy-on-write database branching, similar to Git, which dramatically boosts developer velocity for testing and CI/CD workflows. Compute nodes are stateless PostgreSQL instances that auto-scale up under load and scale down to zero when idle, ensuring cost efficiency. The custom storage engine integrates with cloud object storage (like S3) for 'bottomless storage' and provides point-in-time restore, eliminating traditional database operational overhead. Neon is open-source and fully compatible with the latest PostgreSQL versions (e.g., Postgres 15+).
