RTP
RTP is the industry-standard network protocol for delivering end-to-end, real-time audio and video streams over IP networks.
Standardized by the IETF in RFC 3550, the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) provides the foundation for modern communication tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and WhatsApp. It operates primarily over UDP to prioritize speed and low latency, using sequence numbers and timestamps to handle packet reordering and jitter (timing variations). While it does not guarantee delivery, its partnership with the RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) allows for quality monitoring and stream synchronization. This makes it essential for high-stakes environments like VoIP telephony and live broadcast systems where a 300ms delay can break the user experience.
