AMI

AMI integrates smart meters and high-speed data networks to enable real-time, two-way communication between utility providers and end-users.

AMI replaces manual meter reading with a digital backbone using hardware like Itron Riva or Landis+Gyr E330 meters. It captures consumption data at 15-minute intervals and transmits it via RF mesh or cellular networks to a central Meter Data Management System (MDMS). Operators use this data to detect outages instantly (via last gasp alerts) and slash operational costs: deployment typically reduces truck rolls by 20 to 30 percent. With over 128 million units active in the U.S., AMI provides the granular visibility needed to balance loads and integrate distributed energy resources like solar and EVs.
