Blockcerts provides the open-source framework for decentralized academic and professional credentialing. Originally developed by the MIT Media Lab and Learning Machine, the protocol uses the Bitcoin or Ethereum blockchain to create cryptographically signed documents. This system eliminates the need for third-party intermediaries (like registrars or clearinghouses) by allowing employers to verify a candidate's diploma or license instantly via a digital signature. By shifting the locus of control from the institution to the recipient, Blockcerts ensures that records remain portable, tamper-proof, and accessible even if the original issuing body ceases to exist.
