Telematics
Telematics (telecommunications + informatics) is the real-time system that collects, transmits, and analyzes vehicle data (GPS, diagnostics) for remote asset management.
Telematics is the core technology for the connected vehicle ecosystem: It monitors, manages, and optimizes assets using a dedicated device (T-Box or black box) plugged into the OBD-II port. The system leverages GPS and cellular networks (4G/5G) to stream critical data—location, speed, engine faults, harsh braking—to a centralized cloud platform. This data drives immediate, actionable intelligence for fleet operations (route optimization, predictive maintenance) and consumer applications (Usage-Based Insurance, automatic crash notification). For example, a Geotab GO device can process billions of data points daily, directly improving productivity and safety across commercial fleets.
