ASIC

ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit): A custom-designed semiconductor chip engineered for a single, specific task, delivering maximum performance, minimal power consumption, and superior efficiency over general-purpose processors.

ASICs are purpose-built silicon chips: they are not general-purpose CPUs or reconfigurable FPGAs. This design specificity allows for critical optimization, achieving up to 100x greater energy efficiency and speed for their target application. For instance, specialized Bitcoin mining ASICs outperform standard GPUs by orders of magnitude in SHA-256 computations. Design methodologies range from Full-Custom (highest performance, highest NRE cost) to Semi-Custom (Standard Cell or Gate Array). Modern ASICs often integrate entire systems, including microprocessors and memory blocks, becoming a System-on-Chip (SoC) for high-volume applications like advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) or Google's Edge TPU for AI inference at the network edge.
